Maureen Dowd, "Funny Girl": Hillary-ously Selling Israel Down the River

This past week, President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry were preparing to cut a deal with Iran, whereby in exchange for suspension of some of Tehran's uranium enrichment, the US was prepared to relax certain economic sanctions. The deal would not have affected future operation of Iran's Arak IR-40 Heavy Water Reactor, designed to produce sufficient plutonium for two atomic bombs each year (see: http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/2013/11/09/bad-iran-deal-worse-than-no-deal/?hpt=hp_t2). Seeking to avoid confrontation with Iran at any price, Obama initially turned a deaf ear to Israeli and Saudi protests involving this agreement. However, when France voiced concern over Israel's security, Obama was forced to back down.

In her latest New York Times op-ed entitled "Funny Girl" (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/10/opinion/sunday/dowd-funny-girl.html?smid=tw-NYTimesDowd&seid=auto&_r=0), Maureen Dowd describes how Sarah Silverman in the past called upon Jews to vote for Obama. Dowd writes:

"The comedian says she’s 'not smart enough' about politics, and in an HBO special, airing Nov. 23, she sticks to her usual sweet depravity with jokes about rape, porn, Jews and her family. But she became a hilarious viral force in the last two elections.

In 2008, she did the 'Great Schlep' video urging Jews with grandparents in Florida to withhold visits to 'bubbie' and 'zadie' unless they agreed to vote for Barack Obama.

In 2012, she offered Sheldon Adelson 'an indecent proposal' involving a bikini bottom and a lesbian sexual treat if he would give $100 million to Obama instead of Mitt Romney."

Indeed, in her 2008 'Great Schlep' video, Silverman told viewers that Obama's foreign policy was "much better for Israel" than that of McCain, yet we are now witnessing an Obama foreign policy that endangers Israel's very existence.

If a deal is done, trust Obama to prevent Iran from obtaining atomic weapons? Sorry, but this is the same Obama who abandoned his "red line" after Syria's Assad killed hundreds of civilians with chemical weapons, and later said nothing when US intelligence agencies discovered that Assad was hiding chemical weapons stockpiles, notwithstanding a Russian sponsored agreement prohibiting such conduct (see: http://security.blogs.cnn.com/2013/11/05/first-on-cnn-us-intelligence-suggests-syria-may-hide-some-chemical-weapons/).

Dowd reports that like the rest of Hollywood, Silverman is already throwing her support behind Hillary, who is "so smart and has so much to say and can change the world."

Query for Sarah: Can you name even one achievement by Hillary as secretary of state, other than racking up frequent flyer miles? True, there was that 43-minute telephone harangue of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu in furtherance of Obama's policy of creating daylight between America and Israel, but I suppose for someone, such as Silverman, who sought to convince us that Obama's foreign policy was "much better for Israel," what does it matter?

  1. Well, this is a problem. Sarah Silverman is dictating ME how I should vote. Yes, I am older than she. I also happen to be much, much, much (many more "muches) more educated than Sarah will ever be. I also happen to have quite a good mind, unlike clearly Sarah, but than again she is instructing me. How can we survive?
