Can you imagine Donald Trump running against Hillary Clinton in 2016, provided, of course, that Hillary is not indicted before the Democratic primaries? I can't. The dream of American exceptionalism will have morphed into a nihilistic, narcissistic nightmare, or stated otherwise, a mere hop, skip and a jump away from a Mad Max 3 post-apocalyptic nation.
There are those who believe that Maureen Dowd despises the Clintons. But if push comes to shove, and Trump runs against Hillary, whom would Mo favor? In her latest New York Times op-ed entitled "Trump the Disrupter," Dowd goes remarkably easy on the Donald:
"His policy ideas are ripped from the gut instead of the head. Still, he can be a catalyst, challenging his rivals where they need to be challenged and smoking them out, ripping off the facades they’ve constructed with their larcenous image makers. Trump can pierce the trompe l’oeil illusions, starting with Jeb’s defense of his brother’s smashing the family station wagon into the globe.
Consider how Trump yanked back the curtain Thursday night explaining how financial quid pro quos warp the political system.
'Well, I’ll tell you what, with Hillary Clinton, I said be at my wedding and she came to my wedding,' he said. 'You know why? She had no choice because I gave. I gave to a foundation that, frankly, that foundation is supposed to do good. I didn’t know her money would be used on private jets going all over the world.'
Sometimes you need a showman in the show."
America needs "a showman in the show"? Instead, how about a balanced, altruistic adult, who cares more about his country than his/her legacy and who is capable of saying "No!" to the world's tyrants? Yes, I know: Today, that would be asking too much.
Do not despair JG. Perhaps Dowd fears Trump will decide to buy the NYT after his current Quixotean hobby ends, and make Dowd wear those thigh high Chanel boots from "The Devil Wears Prada" :)
ReplyDeleteMy thought, after listening to the debate again last night, is that Trump should buy the NYDailyNews from Zuckerman, or perhaps buy Bermuda solely to evict Bloomberg...
More likely, Dowd is gleefully using Trump to damage the entire GOP field of candidates, e.g., they are all misogynists or losers (oops, Trump calls them losers).
Trump has not yet revealed his ' policy ideas' to anyone, not even his 'gut'. He is not challenging anyone, except most women...
Listening without watching was very useful. I now understand why Senator Rubio is so admired. It was hard for me to get past seeing such a young face - but he does have the best voice and way of speaking, with serious intellect.
Bernie Sanders's rally in Seattle was disrupted by blacklivesmatters, who have already called for major disruption of the 2016GOP convention (1968 dejavous). Hillary was schmoozing with Sharpton about denial of voting rights. deBlasio thinks Grand Central Station should be a homeless shelter for OccupyWS (ok, I stretched that up - the homeless are still outside on Vanderbiilt Ave).
I can see THEIR MadMax3 post-apocalyptic nation.
As for Trump? Stephen Hayes says it best, in one place:
